Early Zippos, like those made before 1940, are difficult to accurately date, but we can help. For example, a Zippo lighter can be dated to late 1936 or early 1937 by having such features as squared edges and a flat bottom. Also, having a 4 barrel hinge and 14 hole chimney helps provide dating certainty. The insert of a Zippo from this period should feature a piston spring rather than the typical humped spring which was introduced later in 1937.
